just pulling a few here out of my rec folder for you—some (most) of these might be/have a lot of porn, but none of it is without the kind of plot it sounds like you’re looking for, so i hope some of these help make you feel a bit better :’)

Auscultate - Merlin and Arthur first met and got to know each other as children by communicating through the vents in their apartment building.  They grew increasingly close until one day, Arthur finds that Merlin and his family has moved away, seemingly without any trace of a goodbye.  Arthur later finds out he was wrong about that last bit.

The Good Times Are Killing Me - …all right, so I might be fucking insane for suggesting this.  It’s angsty.  Very angsty, to the point where this is one of those fics that the entire fandom knows well, can quote/recognize at the drop of a hat, and more often than not sobs over because it hurts so goddamn much.  It will stay with you in that aching way long after you finish reading it.  But it does have a happy ending—such a lovely ending, in my opinion, in fact, that it very much makes up for all the angst that comes beforehand.  Plot: Merlin and Arthur are broken up, but have to pretend they’re still together for Morgana’s Christmas party.

Feel Your Pain/No Pain At All - When Arthur faces a dangerous opponent in a duel, Merlin casts a spell to redirect a large portion of Arthur’s injuries and pain to himself.  Arthur realizes later what Merlin’s done and takes it upon himself to care for Merlin afterwards.  (The second of these two fics is where most of the comforting takes place, js. :3)

So Close - Merlin has had HIV his whole life because of a blood transfusion when he was born.  Because of this, Arthur has always had very strict instructions regarding what to do whenever Merlin is bleeding, as well as being met with restrictions in Certain Other Areas as they grow older.  One day, though, Arthur has to make a choice.

What Looks Like Crazy - (Once again) Merlin has been diagnosed with HIV, and hasn’t been in a relationship since.  That is, until a blue-eyed, blond-haired, frequent visitor to the coffee place Merlin works at begins pursuing him in earnest.

Where The Hurt Is - (god i rec this fic a lot) Merlin and Arthur are childhood sweethearts, but later during their teen years, Arthur moves away.  They promise to stay in touch by writing letters, but Uther stops Merlin’s letters from arriving to Arthur.  Arthur believes Merlin has forgotten about him—until he finds the letters.

Not An Act, But A Habit - Arthur is a spoiled university student. After one transgression too many, Arthur’s father makes him spend a night at a hostel for homeless youth to give him a reality check. While there, he meets a tough-talking kid who is more than he seems. In spite of themselves, they become inseparable.

At Least It Would Seem That We Don’t - Merlin and Arthur are reincarnated as brothers.

Two Weeks Notice - I don’t talk about this fic much, but it’s probably one of my all-time favorites.  It’s exquisitely crafted and wonderfully written and hilarious, but also with the perfect amount of angst, in my opinion.  Arthur is a prattish Executive VP of the Pendragon Corporation with a disturbingly non-ironic love of Demotivational posters. Merlin is a tree-hugging barista with a “magic” tongue. Morgana’s a peeping Tom and her breasts have superpowers. Gwen and Lancelot get married. Owain is the company bicycle. Arthur attempts to steal Merlin’s affections from Will through epic DDR combat. Merlin gets drunk a lot. There is a pillow fight, and a helicopter ride, and rooftop confessions, and Arthur decides Merlin really is his destiny, whether he likes it or not.

Inside Outright - Merlin and Arthur meet at one of Arthur’s clubs and quickly end up tangled up in each other in a restroom stall.  What was supposed to be just a one-night stand, however, turns into much more when Merlin leaves Arthur with a shocking secret about himself—which leaves Arthur unable to stop thinking about him.

Our Habit of Dreaming - In which Arthur is reborn and Merlin remembers how to live.  (I actually cannot describe how utterly beautiful this fic is.  It’s short, but it absolutely stays with you.)
Note: all right, bella yelled at me for putting this here to ‘cheer you up’, because as she put it, “our habit of dreaming won’t cheer someone up it’ll make them SOB”.
i suppose i should give you fair warning that this fic is written by the same author who wrote world enough and time, neathsunnyskies.  her writing is… ‘beautiful’ seems like quite the understatement.  it’s the kind of writing that is so achingly beautiful that it reaches inside your chest and twists your heart, but at the same time you don’t ever want it to stop because it’s the deepest and most resounding kind of ache there is, where something is literally so beautiful it just fucking hurts.
…so, um, read that one at your own risk, i suppose.

okay i am losing track of how many anons are asking for this now, but okay, here are a few multi-chapter merthur fics that are, if i remember correctly, lighter on the angst okay you know what i left out the ones i remember being really angsty, but if you want longer merthur fics there is GOING TO BE ANGST, so mainly here are some that i remember that have some really hot porn and not an excruciating amount of angst:

Drastically Redefining Protocol - Arthur is Prince of Wales.  Merlin is a doctor.  A coincidental meeting is followed by several items accidentally left in one another’s possession, and pretty soon all hell breaks loose.

A Binding Contract - In a society where people with magic are considered to be dangerous, are labelled as freaks, and have their powers cut off from them, Merlin does whatever he can to survive the hard life he’s faced with. When he’s in desperate need of money, Merlin’s landlord Aredian arranges and offers a magically binding contract in which Merlin is to become a ‘companion’ to Uther Pendragon’s son, Arthur. And when Merlin feels compelled to accept it, he never would have imagined that one man could change his life so completely.

Champagne From a Paper Cup - Arthur is a professional footballer on the verge of making history. Merlin is a medical student with special powers who’s just been hired to work for Arthur’s club. You know the rest.

The Crown of the Summer Court - The Elves need a new king.  Merlin, to everyone’s surprise, is in the running.  Thrust into the ordeal, he doesn’t go into all of it without dragging Arthur along as his ‘champion’.

When Excalibur stops putting videos up, Merlin sends him a private message requesting a little 1:1 action over Skype.  (Little does Merlin know, this isn’t the only way in which he’s ever encountered Excalibur.)

At Least It Would Seem That We Don’t - Merlin and Arthur are reincarnated as brothers.  (Obviously, warning for plenty of incest and angst, but oh god, I especially adore the ending of this fic.)

Our Habit of Dreaming - Immortal!Merlin has been waiting and waiting for Arthur to be reborn again—for so long, in fact, that he can’t accept it when it finally happens.  (This is by the same author as World Enough and Time and I do not have words to anywhere near sufficiently express the beauty of her writing.  Please, please, please just read it.)

well, here are the ones from my own rec list folder.  i suppose it’s sort of up in the air exactly what you’d call h/c, but i think all of these do have at least some element of hurt/comfort, so here you go.

Auscultate - At first, Arthur only knows the boy who lives in the apartment above him because he can hear him crying at night through the vents.  They soon begin communicating through those vents, though, and as they become friends, Arthur realizes the reason for the crying.

What Looks Like Crazy - Three years after being diagnosed with HIV, Merlin Emrys is managing, if not quite coping. Enter Arthur Pendragon, the man who doesn’t know how to take no for an answer.

Finding Home - When Gaius retires, a new physician takes over, one that quickly kicks Merlin out of his room and takes it for himself, Arthur finds Merlin sleeping in the stables… and it’s winter.

Numbers and Figures - Uther is violent at home and Arthur has to hide the bruises in school. New pupil Merlin sees through his popular bullshit at once and discovers the truth.

Such Fractured Shadows - Warning: Triggers for rape.  Lionel is the first, approaching Merlin one late summer afternoon as the sun slants through the dust in the stables and turns the air into heavy fire.  Merlin is repeatedly raped by numerous knights, and it takes a long time before Arthur realizes what’s happening.  (I’m not going to lie, this fic is very difficult and painful to read at certain parts.  Make sure you read the warnings before starting the fic.  The reason it’s here is because in my opinion, the end makes it worth reading if you can handle it.)

Heartbreak, Secret Friends, and Stupid Doodles - After Arthur is dumped by his popular girlfriend, Merlin, who only knows Arthur from a distance, decides to anonymously leave him something to cheer him up.  It escalates.  

This He Will Remember - When Arthur disobeys him, Uther orders Merlin to be whipped in his place.

So Close - Merlin has HIV because of a blood transfusion he had as an infant, and as a result, growing up together Arthur and Merlin had very strict rules to follow regarding cuts and scrapes and the likes.  One day and one incident throws everything upside down, and Arthur is forced to make a choice.

Where The Hurt Is - They were childhood/teenage sweethearts but Arthur’s family moved away (because Uther detested Merlin but Arthur doesn’t know this) and they promise to write. After Uther’s death Arthur finds all the letters from Merlin he never received. All the time he thought Merlin had forgotten him. Arthur seeks him out. (I don’t really know if this qualifies as hurt/comfort, but either way, it’s an absolutely fucking fantastic fic that everyone must read.)

The Good Life - There’s a reason Merlin’s never invited Arthur over to his place, but tonight, he’ll finally tell Arthur the truth.

Breathless - When Merlin is ill and has an asthma attack, Arthur helps him to breathe again.

Not An Act, But A Habit - In an effort to teach Arthur a lesson, Uther sends Arthur to spend a day in a homeless hostel, where Arthur meets some punk named Merlin with a tough-kid act.  After an admittedly rocky start, he grows fond of Merlin and starts volunteering at the hostel to keep seeing him, prompting the development of a relationship neither of them expected.

In Shining Armour - Merlin overhears some nasty things about himself. Arthur is not pleased.

Incubus - Arthur is given a gift. One he cannot possibly use. (This is a wingfic, which [in case you don’t know, because I totally didn’t know until I read it] is a type of H/C fic where one of the characters somehow ends up growing wings, and comfort from the other ensues.  I know it sounds like a bit of an iffy concept [like, not gonna lie, I still don’t really get why wingfic is a thing], but I went ahead and read this anyway and ended up enjoying it immensely.  I mainly include this here because wingfic seems to be universally acknowledged as H/C by definition.)

The Break-Up Box - Arthur is a lawyer who wears suits and has a savvy apartment. Merlin is a college student who talks a lot and loves clothes. (Again, not entirely sure this falls under the umbrella of H/C, but there’s a bit there and either way, it’s a beautiful fic.)

okay here we go, i don’t have a lot of brolin recs but here are some to get you started :3

You’re All a Part of Me - After wrapping series 5 filming, Bradley isn’t ready for the ride to be over, and convinces the rest of the cast to come on a two-week trip to Italy for some final memories together.  Colin’s hesitant; little does Bradley know it’s because Colin’s only barely kept his feelings under control this long.  (this is Somer’s big bang, absolutely hilarious, and wonderfully written.)

How to Fight Loneliness - Now that the knights are part of the main cast on Merlin, Bradley starts spending more time with them and less time with Colin.  Colin withdraws into himself and nobody notices that he’s more or less stopped eating until he collapses on set.  (This fic gives you a really raw, honest, accurate look into depression and eating disorders.  It’s fantastically written and treats the whole situation really well in my opinion, but just be aware that it could trigger some things, mainly regarding eating disorders.)

Something Kind of Wonderful - In which Colin has writer’s block, Katie is helpful, Bradley makes coffee, Angel is awesome, and along the way something kind of wonderful happens. 

Do You Wanna Come Over and Kill Some Time? - Colin and Bradley have a friends-with-benefits type of relationship, but Colin starts throwing himself more and more into his work and has less and less time for Bradley.

Come Crashing In - Colin and Bradley are dancing around a certain issue.  They both want it; it’s just a matter of saying it.  (This is a D/s fic, which I normally am not big on simply because I don’t understand it very well, but what I really loved about this fic was that it gave such a nice look into the sort of psychology behind what was happening with them that I felt like I understood it and I really, really enjoyed it.)

The Rush of Water (as well as its sequels, Rain Wakes Me and Let me be the street) - Colin has firm but unspoken rules about exactly how he and Bradley can fool around, much to Bradley’s disappointment and frustration.  Eventually Colin pulls away completely and all Bradley wants is to have him back.  (I know this sounds a lot like “Do You Wanna Come Over and Kill Some Time?”, but trust me, it’s worth the read—it’s not very long [nor are the sequels] but it’s beautifully written.)

Winterbloom by Shinybug - Deep in the woods in the frozen heart of winter, a careless comment leads to a redefinition of Arthur’s relationship with his manservant.

Privileges of Rank by seperis - In which Merlin loses his key to Gaius’ chambers and Arthur enjoys watching Merlin boss around lower servants.

Something Fragile (When You Hold Your Breath) by Ras Elased - Merlin works at a gay bar/strip club.  Gwaine takes Arthur out for the night to get Arthur’s mind off his recent break-up, and Merlin maybe breaks one or two rules of his job.

Pavlov Penis by derryere - In which Merlin is hot for Arthur’s bed, Arthur’s hot for the laundry, and there’s this big fucking heatwave all over the place.

Desperate Measures by phreakycat - Merlin attempts to curb his sudden, bewildering lust for Arthur through the use of an inventive spell.  Predictably, things go horribly awry.  (I HAVE to include this fic, because in addition to getting extremely hot, I laughed so hard when i read it.  Definitely worth it.)

My Thoughts (Drift To You) by hermette - A small tent, a hot and bothered young warlock, and a prince who, Merlin discovers, is surprisingly in exactly the same state.

Stabdhah by frantic - Arthur joins a yoga class; Merlin is the instructor.
