i don’t think this is it (although it used to be my first thought too), because colin’s played a gay man in multiple skits/plays he’s been in so clearly he doesn’t have a problem with his characters being gay/being portrayed as gay or at least being interested in the same sex. i think it’s more likely that what bothers him is the fact that so many people see merthur when he doesn’t seem to intentionally convey that.
