I bet that when Merlin does eventually tell him, Arthur will just be like “i know, i’ve had my suspicions for a while…” I hope we do get a proper magic reveal but i just have a feeling it will turn out that Arthur sort of already knew!

His little NOD. It’s like he’s just realised what he said and he’s being reminded that Merlin isn’t ready to tell him the whole truth.

Oh, so we’re bringing back the scene that, more than any other, breaks my heart. Welp, time to rant and shout about my feelings! 

First off, yes, Bradley for every once and future award because holy shit he is amazing here, and it shows how much depth and thought he puts into his character and even shows that he wants his role to be so much more than the brawn who occasionally has moments of wisdom and showing he’ll be a great leader, that Arthur’s not fucking stupid and he’s not going to continue without suspicions about Merlin’s magic or at least that there really is something about Merlin that’s different and special.

And to me, Arthur is one of those people who gets so set on a certain train of thought and is so convicted about certain thoughts or ideas or beliefs or conflicts that once he has his opinion and argument planned and in his head, he doesn’t prepare for the argument or conversation to go any other way. Here, he seems like he really does know, or suspect, and in his eyes it just looks as though he’s anticipating the moment when Merlin will show that he trusts him with all of his secrets, fully and completely. There’s a pause and then his whole tone changes and it looks almost like he’s trying to stifle any sort of hope that finally Merlin will tell him the truth and he can’t believe it and good god that fucking pause, he is so fucking ready for Merlin to just tell him and you can see that it’s been hurting him that Merlin’s been keeping him in the dark but he wants Merlin to tell him himself and jesus he already knows what Merlin means but he just wants to hear him say it, and when he doesn’t?

Oh, God, when he doesn’t, that little nod, that second pause, you can see him reeling back and changing his thought process to fit the new turn the conversation is taking. He’s mentally stepping back and at the same time he’s trying to hide his disappointment and hurt and god his eyes and his mouth and that little fucking nod- he knows and he understands but he won’t force Merlin no matter how much it hurts and I just love the whole shift and how it’s evident on his face that he has to switch his whole train of thought and good god i know i’m reading too much into this but sdcvbgfdcvbgtdcvbgf

I really just love this scene and I really fucking think he knows and ugh. This life ruining show.

(also i love how in the first gif he’s almost challenging/daring Merlin to say something or tell him his secret but he doesn’t think he will but he still hopes he will and dfredcftrdefg i’ll stop now)

look at the one above it

look at how his face changes there, how hopeful he suddenly gets.  he’s nearly smiling and the way he’s looking at merlin isn’t a “how dare you talk back to me” or some kind of sudden suspicion.  it’s… it’s just a question.  because arthur wouldn’t truly be surprised and he’s waiting, he’s just waiting and you can see that spark in his face like finally, FINALLY this is it, merlin’s about to come clean.

but then he doesn’t.

and arthur’s face after that, the way he averts his gaze, the way his face falls, the goddamn little nod speaks pretty clearly to the way it hurts him, the way he understands but just wishes more than anything that it were different.

thank you for this, bradley.  all the fucking awards for it, every single one.
